Veterans often ask what VA back pay can look like after a successful claim or appeal. Retroactive compensation depends on the effective date, the disability rating assigned, and whether VA grants service connection, a rating increase, or both.

A veteran received more than $580,000 in retroactive pay after the Board of Veterans’ Appeals found clear and unmistakable error in a 1980 decision and assigned a 100% rating effective back to 1980.
$265,000
After a BVA remand for incomplete development, including missing service medical records, the VA awarded service connection for a psychiatric condition at 100% from 2012, resulting in more than $265,000 in retroactive pay.

The BVA applied the benefit of the doubt and found MST service-connected based on lay statements and medical evidence, awarding benefits back to 2011.

A Gulf War veteran received a 100% rating for PTSD with major depressive disorder, special monthly compensation based on housebound status, and a CUE finding that restored an earlier effective date.

The BVA awarded higher ratings for sciatica, knees, cervical spine, and radiculopathy, plus TDIU from 2010, with benefits released after a CRDP audit.

The BVA gave greater weight to the veteran’s treating oncologist than a negative VA opinion and granted service connection for bone and prostate cancers related to Camp Lejeune water exposure.

The BVA found that Stiff Person’s Syndrome manifested during service, even though VA had denied the claim for years because it was not diagnosed in service. The veteran’s treating physician testified about symptoms shown during military service.

The BVA found clear and unmistakable error in a 1985 rating that failed to decide all conditions reasonably raised by evidence of gunshot wounds. That decision was vacated and ratings were paid back to 1985.
Over $55,000
The BVA connected lumbar spine disability and bilateral lower extremity radiculopathy to service, increased the migraine rating, and granted GERD as secondary to migraine medication.
Over $40,000
The BVA granted service connection for lung cancer from Navy asbestos exposure and assigned an earlier effective date after VA had misled the veteran into believing a claim was already pending.
Over $35,000
The BVA found Parkinson’s disease related to herbicide exposure, including Agent Orange, while the veteran was stationed along the Korean DMZ, reversing VA denials that there was no evidence of DMZ service.
